Synaesthesia is a theory
generally defined as the 'unity of the senses', a deeper state of aesthetic awareness. This explained means that
a sensory perception of one kind within our body and mind may reveal itself as a sensory experience of another. For example
in Visual Music this is the phenomena of seeing a colour when hearing a certain sound. Colour can be interpreted as a scale
of tones which vary in brightness and mood. Sir Issac Newton believed that each note in the musical scale could correspond
with the colours of the rainbow. Music can be compared to colour in a similar context.
The chromatic scale for example as found in music theory could be related to Johann Wolfgang Goethe 's colour
wheel theory showing a chromatic circle of colours with harmonious colours blending into each other.
When stimulated by the natural sounds and colours of nature I believe that if we can engage with these elements
on a higher level we can experience different sensory perceptions interpreted from our own individual experiences. My work is an ongoing exploration into different levels of synaesthesia and how to interpret
my own perceptions of sound, music and colour into art. To study this in depth I use a wide range of media from experimental
painting to light sculpture and film.
