Abyss
is inspired initially from my experience of exploring underwater and the link with the human form and our primordial past.
The roots of evolution and adaption to the environment are uncoiled in the process of life in our DNA. When life first evolved
the earth was covered entirely with shallow water known as primordial soup. Life developed from the simplest forms like plankton
and molluscs and simple plants.
The installation suggests the darkness
of this underwater world at that time, the phosphorescent of organisms, the roots of growth exploring the vibrations of the ocean and the human body completes the circle of life. The skeletal and fossil-ridden
underwater landscapes found in corals, rocks and the seabed are my window into the past and the roots from which we evolved.
To swim through kelp forests in an underwater garden provides an opportunity to become part of this strange abandoned world.
The composition of sound accompanying the installation is constructed from sound-clips of echolocations of
creatures of the ocean. I have edited and structured these snippets of sound into rhythms to form a contemporary dance soundtrack
for the performance. The viewer can enter this installation space and become a part of this world a bit like walking into
a painting.
